Mold in dreads! Advice needed please.

Dread Maintenance

The tips are blunted on the thicker locs where the problem lies, maybe I haven't been rinsing properly, but I think you're right, don't think I'll take any chances with this one, might grab some of that rot knot and get rid! Thanks again for the advice brother!

Mold in dreads! Advice needed please.

Dread Maintenance

Hey Soaring eagle, no I have never tied them up, trying to keep them loose until they've fully formed. Have you ever heard of baking soda building up in dreads before, wondering if I've been using too strong solution? If not then I'm guessing it is mould. I recently ordered the shampoo bars from Dreadlockshampoo and love them, but living in the UK postage is a sting in the tail! I might try the white vinegar and Lavender oil solution I've seen you post on other forums. How many courses would it normally take to get rid of the mould (if it is mould?)and how often should I do it?

Mold in dreads! Advice needed please.

Dread Maintenance

Ok, so I recently posted an issue concerning what i beleived to be mold at the tips of my nearly 1 year old dreads. At first I was unsure if it was a build up of baking soda, but I can't find anything online to suggest it a possibility. So, with lint and/or mould being the only other two options I thought I'd finally take a closer inspection. I gently scratched the tip of one of my locs to get a closer look at what was in the middle and found what I think was mould running through it, I flicked it with my finger and a powdery residue (like mould spores) were released. I have noticed on occasion that my hair has a slight musty smell when wet! If this is mould, I'm not sure how it has happened as I wash my hair in the mornings giving it time to dry during the day. I think when I first started, I may have washed at night once or twice due to lack of knowledge and I do bath as I have no shower, so maybe the moisture in the air is getting into my dreads? Please help, as I have gotten this far and my dreads are just starting to get some real definition, I really don't want to have to cut them off.

Grey hair? Mildew? Or Baking Soda build up??

Introduce Yourself

Well, it does seem to be secluded to areas where more grey is present, and I'm guessing (if it is indeed grey hair?) it would be more present at the tips as that's the area of dread that knotted up the most so far. I'm going to try this dreadlockshampoo a go anyway. A change of approach might be worth a try. Thanks for the advice guys.

Grey hair? Mildew? Or Baking Soda build up??

Introduce Yourself

Thanks for the replies. To be honest, I don't tie my dreads as they're still too short and in early stages of forming (at 9 months) and unfortunately we don't get much sun here in the UK, so perhaps i should think about switching to the dreadlock shampoo, as I've been using the Baking Soda and acv for the 9 months so far. So you don't think it's just the grey hair? I'm really hoping its not mildew.

Grey hair? Mildew? Or Baking Soda build up??

Introduce Yourself

Hello, I'm not normally one to worry too much about issues regarding my dreads, but I was wondering if anybody could help me? I have been letting my hair dread naturally for about 9 months now and have noticed the tips of some of my dreads are looking quite greyish white in colour. Now, there are a few factors involved and I'm not sure if I'm worrying about nothing but here goes! I have been washing my hair with Baking Soda (or Bi Carbonate as we call it here in the UK) and acv rinse, I wash it once a week and do it in the morning as to give it a chance to air dry before I go to bed. So I was wondering could this be a build up of Baking Soda? Or worse still, could it be mildew? My hair doesn't smell and its always dry before I go to bed, and as far as I'm aware I am rinsing it properly?? Another possibility is grey hair, I do have quite a few of em coming through and being that I've never dreaded my hair before I'm not sure how grey hair looks when it dreads? Any help would be welcomed!
