My Progress After Just 4 Days Of Neglect! Must See To Believe!

Dreadlocks Journey Emotional Support

Today is day #4-5 of starting dreads using the neglect/natural method. Let it be understood that for four days now, I have washed every day without conditioning and haven't brushed or combed at all. Last night, I discovered a lumpy mat at the nape of my neck. So today I pulled it into two sections and did some twisting to help shape them. To help them stay separated, I then put a small plastic bead on each one, only pushing the bead up until it wouldn't go any farther--I didn't force it!

The rest of my hair has gradually been forming into pencil- and marker-sized sections on its own... No major dreading action yet, but it's closer and closer each day! But I'm very proud of my two little baby dreadlets!! HERE THEY ARE!

What Can I Do About Static?

General Questions

I thought of that, but I have the problem of my hair sticking to my face off and on throughout the day. I guess I'll just have to put up with it... *sigh*

BUT!!!! ON A POSITIVE NOTE!!!! AND YOU'RE GONNA LIKE THIS!!! I have two locking sections at the nape of my neck! They are knotty and matted and very dread-esque! I noticed them last night, but they were more like a big lumpy mat of knotted hair. Earlier to day, I separated the 'lump' into two nice sections and was able to do so without ruining the progress. So am now the proud mama of two little baby dreadlets!! And after just four days of neglect!! WOOHOO!!

What Can I Do About Static?

General Questions

So I'm on day four of neglect/natural dreads. I haven't been conditioning my hair, so static has become a problem for me. Every time I put on my coat, scarf and hat, my hair goes all over the place! It sticks to my face and is driving my crazy! What can I do about it without interfering with my dreading method?

The Dyeing of the Dreads! What Color Are Yours?

Dreadlock Styles and Dread Styling

Since hair dye gets all over everything as the excess works its way out, perhaps this is the reason so many dread-heads love tie-dyed clothing--it's harder for people notice stains. LOL But thanks so much for the info!

I've dyed my dreads a lot... and its a pain to keep up.
I never go to a salon, always done it myself or had a friend help.

Basically the same rules apply as dying regular hair.. except you can't use conditioner afterwards so regular hair dye tends to be more damaging to dreadlocks.

If you plan to just keep up on your roots it will be a much less tedious process.

If you want vibrant color in your hair you'll have to bleach first... then veggie dye works well for the color, and its actually good for your hair. but it does fade quickly.
You can also use the veggie dye over dark hair for subtle highlights... but again it fades so quickly, to me its hardly worth the mess. (and believe me there is a mess, the color stains everything lol)

Also, Baking Soda/ACV strips a lot of the color out of hair, so you may want to use mostly dr. bronners or dreadlock shampoo bars after you dye.

I've attached a few pics, the first pic my hair was dark blondish, and I bleached a few random dreads. Then I used Manic Panic veggie dye (2 canisters) in Vampire Red and the results are pic 2.
In pic 3 I dyed my hair brown, with a red intensifier... and then after it faded I used manic panics semi-permanent dye in a purple color with more of the red intensifier mixed in. The purple tint faded to brown really quickly though.

If you have any questions I'm happy to help :)

The Dyeing of the Dreads! What Color Are Yours?

Dreadlock Styles and Dread Styling

My natural hair color is dark brown, but for the last year I've been dyeing it black at the salon. After my hair dreads and locks up, I want to continue to dye, but with purple and teal on the under-layers and black still on the top and around my face.

How many folks on here have dreads that they keep dyed? What kind of dye do you use? Do you have it done at a salon or at home? I want to have a head full of colorful dreads someday and just wondering what dyeing techniques are best. Please feel free to post a photo of your dyed dreads!

Another Newbie!

Dread Maintenance

Start washing more frequently. Hair dreads better when it's clean.

Neglect vs. Back-Combing... Help Me Decide!

Dreading Methods

You're right about starter methods being frustrating! 1.5 years ago I tried to start dreads by sectioning and back-combing and it was a pain in the ass. First off, I did it myself and since I can't see the back of my own head, it was lopsided and really terrible-looking back there. Also, I wasn't educated on how to deal with dandruff. And I was feeling like all that work I did was coming undone. It sucked. So hopefully this time I'll have dreads!

Neglect vs. Back-Combing... Help Me Decide!

Dreading Methods

*UPDATE*

I just showered and shampooed only and did not condition or comb my hair after I got out and dried off. At the moment, my hair is drying naturally and is already forming sections... Some small like yarn and some more like a pencil or an extension cord. My part is naturally off-set towards my left (if you're facing me then to your right) and somewhat zig-zagged.

Here's my current plan:

I shall continue to wash every other day as usual, since my scalp gets kinda oily. (Thanks, Dad! LOL) However, I will discontinue combing, brushing and conditioning. I will keep this up for a few weeks and see how it goes. If it seems to be working, then I'll keep going. I'll start using my hair dryer once I notice actual locks forming so as to prevent moldy dreads.

Wish me luck and do continue to reply, telling me your thoughts on this. :)
