possibly a weird question

General Questions

so a while ago my GF gave me a lock of her hair (not the dreadlock kind, just a small clipping tied up in string) and as I was sitting around tonight looking at it, I got this weird idea in my head that it would be all super sappy and romantic and shit if I could find some way of dreading it into my own locks. now I know that extensions and the like are possible, thats not what i'm thinking of though, looking more at incorporating it somewhere in the middle of a dread. figure i shouldn't be too difficult, especially now while they are still forming, any ideas as to exactly how I could go about such a thing though?

my current thought are to find a nice little loop somewhere, thread her hair through it, then maybe sew it in with some thread that could be removed later once it had started to lock into place. only other thing i could think of was just strappng it to the side of one of the dreads with a hair elastic but 1 eww elastics and 2, seems like there would be a high risk of it slipping out before locking in.

open to any and all suggestions.

I love me dreads but I hate getting made fun of in school

General Talk

I know it can be hard but try to just ignore them. and remember, its just high school, 3 years and your done and never need to see or hear from any of them ever again. Don't let their opinions dictate who you are, do what makes you happy.

3 1/2 month update... real life happened and the regular picture taking stopped which i'm still kicking myself about. things are progressing a hell of a lot faster than I had figured they would especially given the method used. the tips have all come out but I kinda like the look of the dreaded hair with long undreaded tips. they are deffinetly doing many interesting things as time goes on, looping and kinking up EVERYWHERE. I've got a couple that have taken on distinct lightning bolt shapes as they've flattened and kinked, and one of em is looking quite a bit like a blonde candy cane lol. its also becoming really obvious that I sleep on one side far more than the other because the left side is dreading up much faster than the right.

preventing congos is proving to be a bitch, seems like every day, and soemtimes multiple times a day I'll find a couple of em that just insist on trying to meld together, which is a problem since already some of em are thicker than I would like (and those are the ones that insist on getting friendly with each other.) again, probably due to the method and not having the sectioning be natural. while I still don't regret my choice personally, when my GF mentioned to me her plan to dread her mohawk once it grows out longer I very emphatically led her far far away from the crotchet method.

as for various problems i've run into, the congoing I mentioned is the biggest one currently, so bad in fact that after a week of getting busy and not paying attention to it, two of them had melded together so tightly I had to... *shudder* use a knife to seperate them enough to actually pull them back apart. had it been some of the smaller ones I wouldn't have cared but these where to of the largest and I didn't want this one massive dread sticking off to the side. chainmail issues have gone away, I figured out a method for putting it on and off that protects my hair from all the sliding rings. also discovered a couple baby dreads at the back that are going a bit weird, they are super thick puff balls at the tips that go into super thin super tight dreads towards the roots, I assume this is due to wearing bandanas a lot, but with winter coming on and my switching to touqes that will hopefully fix itself.

far as maintenance goes, all i'm doing is spending some time seperating them a couple times a day (when I remember) washing once a week with dreadlock shampoo its really wonderful stuff. with a couple times a week doing a hot water wash, generally before I go swimming (which i've been doing a lot of and probably helps to account for some of the speed at which they have been knotting)

gonna get the gf to take some pictures of the progress later on today, its been tough on ocassion, with more than a few cuddling related nose-ring + dread fiascos, but i'm still finding myself loving them more and more every day... do kinda miss being able to whip my hair around sometimes though, but that ability will be back and better than ever soon enough.

My Dreadlock Video Timeline.

Member Journals and Timelines

So I've been taking more pictures (not quite every day since things have been busy but as near as I could get it) and I will be uploading another progress video this weekend.

as for my one month update, been getting a LOT of loose hairs, but thats to be expected with the method that I used, the good natured ribbing from my co-worker has ended which I take to mean he's just gotten used to it now. quite a few of the locks have begun to flatten out and become more oval shaped, I figure this is just a part of the knotting process so i'm not fretting about it too much, a few of em especially at the back have started to really bunch up to the point of being almost one big knot dangling at the end of undreaded hair, but I figure this too will sort itself out with time.

things i've learned in the past month... dreadlocks + chainmail = PAIN!!! and awkward entangled moments where your hanging upside down trying to support the weight of the armor with one hand while frantically trying to disentangle the rings from your hair with the other before you pass out from the blood rushing to your head... yeah... that was an experience I don't want to repeat.

second related thing I learned, how to put on and take off chainmail with dreadlocks without torturing yourself. the trick is to wear an under tunic and use that to cover the hair while putting things on/taking things off.

So this is a video timeline I will be keeping of my dreads, had them installed yesterday with backcomb and crotchet (yes yes horrible I know, let the stoning commence, you will find the torches and pitchforks over in the corner next to the burning stake)

gonna be going fully natural from here on out and will be trying to upload a new progress video roughly once per month. so here it is in all its woven crotcheted "glory"

New to dreadlocks

Introduce Yourself

thanks, and yeah i'm fully prepared for the massive frizzies i'm gonna be getting. and I shall love every one of em because thats just one step closer to them repairing themselves and getting where I want to be.

also already got one favorite, its this stubby little thing right at the back of my neck was the first one put in. I have named him nubblet. I'm sure my favorites are gonna change a million times over the years but for now he's it and I love him for all his retarded stumpyness.

it still wouldn't have fixed my finger combing compulsion though. I get that natural locks are better, and I would recommend that method to any of my friends who ever wanted to get em. but different circumstances for different people, I know myself well enough to know that without taking the steps I did there was little to no chance of eventual success for me. end of the day I'm happy with my hair and happy with my decision despite the fact that it will take a bit longer. and really that's what matters most.

because after 2 months there was ZERO progress, like not even a single knot or tangle, zip, nada, zilch. as I said, its something I had thought long and hard about. deffinetly wasn't my first choice, or even the second or third but it was I felt the best option to get me set up for where I eventually wanted to go, even if it does take longer its better to take longer to get there than not be able to get there at all.

Yeah, that was something I had considered long and hard about before deciding to go through with it. but I was concerned that just backcombing or TNR wouldn't be enough to combat the finger combing (seriously, until I decided to get dreads I never noticed how often I did it... its like every 5 minutes I would catch myself)

If i'd thought there was a less damaging method that would have worked for me I would have done it. but everyone is different and in my particular situation I figured the benefits outweighed the negatives. first, last, and only time a crotchet hook will be touching my hair. but I am over all content with my decision to use that method... besides, at the end of the day whats 6 months or a year or even 5 in the grand scheme of things

New to dreadlocks

Introduce Yourself

Hey there everyone, I'm Ulfrick from toronto canada, after many many years of wanting dreadlocks but always coming up with one excuse or another not to get em (and a rather lamentable period where I had to chop all my hair off for work) Mine finally grew back long enough and I decided to finally take the plunge. spent the past two months or so pouring over any and all information I could find about em (including spending many many hours pouring over this wonderful site)

During that time I was trying to go for the natural dread approach, picked up some residue free shampoo, increased my washing regimine to 3 times a week (I've been doing a natural water only regimine once a week for the past 5 years) however after those 2 months and due to a compulsive finger combing habit I have (was trying to control it but no such luck.) my hair was still just as razor straight and smooth as the day I began, so despite knowing the inherent risks I took the plunge and got help putting em in with crotchet and backcombing... yes yes I know how damaging it is for the hair, and I know that it will take longer for them to mature and repair themselves, but its better than them never forming at all.

Anyways I do have some pictures on my phone both before and after which I will be uploading to the timeline segment next chance I get. i'm really happy with em and excited to see where this journey takes me.
