Article Critique: "White People and Dreadlocks: A Problematic Union"

History and Religious Significance

I am Hispanic and I have dreads!...I am from Spain and I have seen dreads always...and over there is not about black or white...is not even about be a rastafarian or not...is a way of living,a way of thinking...so when people say that type of bullshit I cant do anything else but laugh about it!...we have a lot of africans inmigrants living there and they dont give a crap about us having dreads or not....i dont know why here in America they care so much!!

SE, some may call your last comment borderline saintly and others may think about it some more and call it arrogance. It's deep, either way. Worthy of consideration and meditation at least.

I will say this though; every culture's history has it's own evil moral baggage and nasty assed skeletons they want to forget or even pay people to censor out of history books. No matter what your color, tribe, ethnicity, or other EXclusive and not INclusive way you want to segregate humanity into groups this is true. We all have crap in the past that haunts us, embarasses us, and others try to hold over on us. I think it's up to individuals and the parents of today to teach their children how to avoid the attitudes of the past.

Now I want to see some hispanic dreads for a little flavor. come on! Where are you??? Let's really piss that ethnocentric bastard of an author off.

some questions about sea water!

Dread Maintenance

My dreads are 4 month old and my hair is really straight...they are getting tighter on the roots than on the tips and I have a lot of loose hair around them.. I was thinking if using some sea water on them will help the tips to progress a little faster...since I dont have sea water I would like to know if I can mix sea salt with warm water and spray it on my hair or rinse my hair with it...and If I can ...how much of salt for every cup of water??

IM PREGNANT!!! but..

Dreads in the Family

Congrats!!!...I was 7 months pregnant when I decided to grow my dreads...my family wasn't happy about it and my husband is on the navy, so I wasn't sure about how people were going to react, but I did it and I am pretty happy about it!!....I am about to have my baby in a couple of weeks and my family is coming from Spain to be with me when my baby arrive. I cant wait to see their faces!!!

As long as you and your husband are happy about it everything is going to be fine, after all you have to live your own life, cuz if you are to worry about what people think, in the end you will realize that you lived other peoples life not yours and you will probably regret it!!

Take care and congratulations again!!

how' is everyones (Twist n Rip) coming along?!!!!

General Talk

I admire the people who do natural dreads all the way!!....I am a very impatient person and it is killing me sometimes to see how slow they are progressing but I am pretty happy in general and I cant wait for them to mature all the way!!

General Talk

Hi Adrian!!...I am doing TNR too but I am afraid that I dont have a lot of experiences neither!! :^P

I started mines 7 weeks ago and they seem to be doing good...the ones in the front are progressing super slow (they are thinner too)..but the ones in the back are progressing faster,, I don't know if it is because they are thicker or because they are on the back!!

It looks like they are shrinking a little and are getting some loops and knots and I have a lot of loose hair most of them on my roots but around the dreads too!! :^D

I need some tips about henna!!

Dreadlock Styles and Dread Styling

thank you so much Niko!!...I tryed natural henna once a long time ago,i got it from one trip that i made to the desert and I loved the way it turned out on my hair but like you said it was hard to wash it out!....I am afraid to do it on my baby dreads!!

Thank you so much for the link!!...I will let you know how it was if I finally decide to do it!!

take care!

Hey there, before dreads I dyed my hair with henna all the time. Here's what I used, for copper-ish hair, but this brand has all of the natural hair colours, made of henna:

http://www.theincensestore.com/online_store/henna-hair-colouring-po...

I recommend it,I love the colours that this product (and its other colours) produce, but my hair stylist once told me not to because the colouring has added metallics (for the colour) which aren't necessarily good for your hair.

So it's probably best to use real, fully natural henna (which can turn your hair from shades of light brown to dark maroon, depending on your hair type...it's kind of an experiment every time).

I haven't tried henna in my dreads yet because I'm worried that since it is such a grainy, powdered substance it will be harder to wash it out. I had a hard enough time trying to get the tiny grains out of my NORMAL hair, haha, and would spend at least 45 minutes in the shower...and then some.

I hope this helps a little...let me know how your henna experience goes, I'd love to know! :)
