Starting natty dreads w/ short hair.

Introduce Yourself

Ironic, the other site tells you to do the wrong things and you come to another site to be told what to do:) Time man. The biggest response you will get here is let your hair grow and don't touch it.

Because you are black you probably have in mind brush rubbing or twists right, then interlocking possibly tight roots once they get more mature? I met this cat in San Diego he started out with twists 8 years later cut them off and started natural and just let his hair go.

But if you are wanting typical black thin dreads then neglect might not be for you ad your hair with section on its own, some thins some thick. Your hair may not get nice and tight right away too.

There are some other black guys on here who started their hair about 1-2inches, they were told they did it wrong. I started mine at 3inches 6 months ago and right now my dreads are a little over 6 inches.. I'd first go with just leave them be, but culturally I would say brush rub, your hair is pretty short, and depending on how fast it grows depends on how you want to take care of it. But no wax,

If you can get a fan to just blow gently on your head. I'm similar to you, I can sweat just sitting in a car with the AC on 18! At night I have the fan on my head it helps a lot. My normal temp day is 85f-90f with 75-80%humidity. SO its a tad warm here.

Non-supportive family

Life Issues Facing Dreads

I agree with the nest thing, sometimes leaving the nest even if it is for college is a good thing.

@Joseph in regards to what he said, the Nazarite vow has nothing to do with dreads, and if of Jewish faith then the lifestyle that is included in following that vow is a very big step. If they are Christian said vow only applies if you follow a Messianic faith, where the Law is still in effect, keeping Sabbath dietary Law as well as wearing a head covering at all times if you are a girl, etc. No soap box intended but to throw out religious stuff to justify without fully understanding it causes problems. Look at most religions today! Nazarite vow has nothing to do with dreads, it is to dedicate ones life to being pure and holy and undefiled. Also no grape products or fermented anything. -

Interlocked

Introduce Yourself

Some will say take them out because you will get holes in them. Others might say let them grow out and then cut them off. Are your dreads fashion, a lifestyle a spiritual thing? If you are just doing fashion, I say let them be and if you do get holes in the future you can simply cut the ends off. You might not have chosen what others in a natural neglect site would have chosen, but you made your choice.

Ethnicity has a lot to do with it, but since you are Caucasian I've got no help for you. I undid a ton of mine, 76 out of 80, two have places in them I don't care for, but they are not holes, just little knots. But the back of my neck and new growth I interlocked and it dreaded up just fine. Not a huge help I know, but I'm willing to accept that not everyone gets dreads for the same reason, for the same time, or the same method. You didn't use wax so happy days.

Dreads and Liquid dish Detergent

Dread Maintenance

I am mixed too, I use Dr. Bronners sometimes and African Black soap. My hair is crazy dry, but that is genetics man! If you want sheen that is one thing, but our hair does what it does, personally I'm not worrying about the dryness until my hair matures a bit more. Once I add anything to my hair it does this crazy thing of going completely straight until it dries, that includes water. I used to just use dial body soap for my hair, or whatever was in the shower, I wouldn't use dish soap, though because it is meant to break down oils,

Just for an experiment I did a natural thing, luke warm water, no soap no shampoo. My skin liked it, I didn't smell, and my hair kinked right up. You might want to give that a try if you don't have any dandruff issues. This is just keeping in mind our hair is a tad different.

General Questions

Kiara, I would ask for two, then you can use them to keep up your hair, or use it as a head band etc. Once my daughter gets a little older that is what we will start her on.

I appreciate very much that you respect your family so much!
