Intro / Dreadlock newbie Question

Introduce Yourself

I have frizzy, thick hair. My dreads pretty much did there thing over time. They truly do not lie when everyone suggests you just let them go naturally. No dreadlocks are the same, and unless you have super manufactured your dreads with products (IE crochet hooks, wax, etc) they won't look like synthetic dreadlocks.

I wash my hair about every 3 days with dreadlock shampoo, unless I work out, or do something that causes me to sweat a lot. Which then I wash as needed. It's the drying process that takes time.

You can look up really neat dreadlock hair dos on the web too.  Be creative.

I don't do any maintentance to my dreadlocks besides washing by the way. You can check out my pictures if you want.

Racial Appropriation Discrimination

Life Issues Facing Dreads

Hello there my fellow lockies.

I haven't been on in awhile, but I wanted to share with you my first negative reaction to my dreadlocks!

Most of the time when people (of any race) see my dreadlocks, they shower me with compliments and positive feedback. Seeing my locks even encouraged one young lady to keep hers going! She was going neglect route and was having those newbie worries we all had once upon a time.

So I made a friend in the last year. I will let you know right now that this friend is a caucasian female. She let me know very soon in our friendship that she was a feminist. That's awesome! I can get on with the woman rights. So as time goes on, I also noticed she proclaimed to be all about equality. Some more time went by and I realized, shes not about all equality, shes about african american equality. Which is awesome too, everyone should have equal rights. (Though I didn't understand why she chose this one particular race over all races, I admit.) I soon found out she was Anti-Racist, which apparently is just as bad as being racist - because usually it ends up being racist!

So one day she posts something about negative views of "white people with black hairstyles" aka dreadlocks.  I asked her about it, and then she goes off on me about how I shouldn't have dreadlocks because of..wait for it... my skin color?!  WHAT? Of course I'm not nice about it.  She gives me these links where an africian american woman rants about how white people can't have dreadlocks without damaging their hair. Of course I know better, we all do!

Although I didn't let her know, this made me slightly insecure. I then took a week after that and literally asked every other race person who walked through my job doors about how they felt of me having dreadlocks. What a surprise, they all loved them, and no one felt any racial aggression towards me about them.

I expected this to come up with another race, not my own and being my own friend. It truly irritated me.

How to split dreads safley. Really??

Dread Maintenance

SE is right. I admit, awhile back I decided to split one of my dreadlocks in back. It was a complete neglect dread (also my longest) But it started to twist in a manner that was making my head hurt so bad.

I didn't want to comb it out and restart, so I had my husband cut it down the middle. Now I have two dreadlocks that are completely destroyed. They are still dreaded nice near the base, but it will be a long time before I am able to see a normal dreadlock from them again.

pimple like bumps around hair line? anyone else?

Introduce Yourself

I had this problem about two weeks ago. It was itchy as hell too! I bought some of the tea tree oil type shampoo from dreadlockshampoo.com and now I dont have that problem anymore. It really is just an irritation from your dreadlocks pulling/you itching.

Dreaming About My Dreadlocks

General Talk

First off, I know this isn't exactly about dreadlocks, but it has to do with my dreadlocks so I figured I'd ask opinions.

I've been having this recurring dream. I'm standing in my bathroom, brushing my hair all nonchalantly. Then it hits me, my dreads are gone! I start freaking out and looking through my long loose hair only to find a few remaining dreadlocks on the back of my head.

I was wondering what you guys thought about this dream?

I don't really think its the obvious, because I'm not afraid my dreads are going to suddenly fall out overnight.

And just to add a side note: My dreads will be turning 1 year old this Feb 27th. =3

The recent debate i've come across

General Talk

I find it strange when I read about people getting offended and such about this hairstyle. It's very rare anyone says anything negative towards me, and I live in an area that is full of country religious people. Generally it's people complimenting my hair, and even screaming across parking lots about how they love my dreads. The only person that's really been offended was my aunt, (But she is a hair dresser). lmao. I think to those people who even begin to spew their delusional ownership opinions upon you you just say;I do what I want!
