wrapping newly forming dreads?

Dread Maintenance

Hello dread lock family! This is Mikhail's girlfriend Courtney and I am wondering if it's okay to wrap newly forming dreads?! I have A LOT of hair that is wavy and have been neglecting it for a almost 3 weeks now and the dreads are forming very quickly. It is taking so much maintenance to keep sectioning it, everyday all my hair starts to knot together making a massive congo even if I just sectioned it the day before. I want to know if it is okay to wrap some yarn or hemp loosely around the sections to keep them from turning into massive congos. Also if anyone has a tutorial on how to that would be great, thanks!

Seeking advice

General Questions

I'm going on three months of neglect now. I haven't brushed, combed, finger brushed, or anything at all, just washing with vickis liquid shampoo and neglecting. However, I'm yet to have a single knot or section form yet. Im just wondering if its normal to take this long, especially considering my hair is relatively short compared to most people dreading, or if its that I'm doing something wrong during washing or something like that. When i wash i just lather into my hands and use my finger tips to scrub my scalp and i always air dry. I'm really hoping to do this totally naturally but since my accident caused me to lose my job I'm now running out of funds and looking for a new one.. and potential employers haven't been digging the natural process. So I'm also wondering if its worth it to give it a twist and rip maybe and then just leave it. I imagine its easier to get a job with hair that already resembles dreads than hair that is just messy and knotting. But please tell me if anyone has found that to be not true lol, as I'm seeking advice on wether or not to twist and rip also.

Natural process 9 months.. doubts

Introduce Yourself

I think they look great man! Ultimately its up to you but i would say it depends why you are considering cutting them. If its solely because you don't like the way they're looking i would definitely say don't do it. They're looking great for nine months and when they're fully mature they will look really good.

THE NECK BRACE IS COMING OFF!!!

General Talk

Its been wayy too long lol. My doctor told me to stop wearing it while sleeping and to wear it an hour less every day until I'm not wearing it at all. I'm mainly posting this out of excitement but also to point out something it taught me about the freeform dreading process. Since i was sleeping with it every night i was only compressing the sections on the back of my head. Needless to say those sections are still there. However, i had sections on the sides and front too but, ironically, when i switched to the lockin up liquid shampoo it cleaned the shit out of my hair.. so much that the sections just came out. I didn't do anything different from when i was using the bar so my assumption is that sleeping on them really is a very important part of the dreading process. So I'm stoked to start sleeping on my sides and stomach again, I'm thinking it will help. If you more experienced people have a better explanation as to why the sections on the sides and front came out let me know. Everyone on this site is always so helpful so thank you, Namaste.

General Questions

yea that seems pretty average from what I'm hearing. And as much as i like Baba Fats "tie em up and pray they don't get too wet" method i think i might rock a shower cap between washes =p Thanks <3

mine are roughly 5.5 months old and they are shoulder length, they take about 5 or 6 hours to dry, my last wash took 7hrs. I wear a shower cap in the shower between washes.

General Questions

Makes sense to me. Besides, i know too many people with dreads who are out surfing all the time and they got no problems. Thanks again.

That's pretty much the thought process I have behind doing it that way and I haven't run into any funky smells or issues yet.

General Questions

Thanks man this is exactly what i was looking for. And i do love those evening sessions so.. it seems like the main thing is stagnant water staying in them too long. By that i mean its not a big deal if they stay wet all week as long as they're getting rinsed, washed and stay clean. So whenever a good swell hits and I'm pulling the all day sessions five days in a row just do some good bs/acv soaks before bed and after waking up and i shouldn't have to worry about mold even if they don't get a chance to dry for a few days. Does that sound about right?

I'm a Scuba Instructor and see a lot of ocean time as well. Usually if I've done a night dive (a late evening sesh for you) or been in the water near/after sunset, I will wash my hair right before I go to bed and again right when I wake up (even though I'm likely to be diving within a few hours again). If I don't get to it at night it gets a bit more attention on the morning wash. I primarily use the Dreadlocks Shampoo but if I'm worried about mold setting in I do a slightly more concentrated wash using the BS/ACV with oils. On busy weeks I'm fairly certain my dreads don't fully dry until the weekend when I'm out of the water for at least a day. I find that being in the sun and wind as much as I am has a better drying effect than any other method I've tried involving towels.

Haha yea thanks i can't wait to start surfing again. I used to get dreads just from one session. Thanks again, Love & Peace

As long as your hair dries completely each time, then there is no problem. Just never go to bed with wet hair or the mold will set in. Rinse the ocean water out of your hair when finished, you don't want the salt sitting in your dreads drying them out.... BTW, hair dreads super fast from being in the salty ocean water, lucky you! (you won't need to mix your own sea salt sprays or use the Hymalian sea salt spray)

Thanks to all of you for clearing that up. Especially Barrellady, thanks for taking the time to write such a good explanation. With all that said do you guys think i would have anything to worry about if I'm in the ocean every day? Im still healing from my accident but I'm typically a beach bum, especially if theres waves, ill be out surfing every day. I know lots of people are worried about mold, should i be worried about that if I'm in the ocean every day?
