I don't know if you guys have a discussion or whatever about this yet, but I really need to know the truth. See, I'm planning on having dreads for only two years, removing them the summer before college. But the problem is my parents. They're really strict with me about the littlest stuff, like my hair. I haven't been able to do anything short of cutting it all my life. I had highlights in it once and they freaked. But anyways, my parents are waging war against me and my decision to get dreads. I really want them before I go to college.My aunt-in-law who is a self proclaimed hair specialist or whatever, told my mom that dreads have to be cut off to get rid of them. And that you'll lose a third of your hair volume. And I have really thin and fragile hair. So basically my parents are worried that I'll ruin my hair beyond recognition.Oh, and my aunt-in-law also said that it changes your hair texture. I have really wavy-ish hair.How can I convince my parents that dreads are a safe and natural hairstyle that isn't any different than say, getting extensions? Or are they really bad for tyour hair?

Removing dreads
well u can remove them without cutting but its not easy and u will lose some hairbut when u dread you wull want to dread for lifeyu will not want to get rid of them for college u will go through a depression thats deep and profound if you lose your dreads a loss of self feelingso if u dread you should dread with the intenjtion of dreading for lifebut if u had to..u can remove themim sorry your parents are that wayy mone were too and it totale suckedlets talk

i think if the best way to convince your parents that dreads are a good thing, is to simply sit them down and have them look at this site, so much info, real info, and show them some of these fine peoples pics, i mean just wow, so beautiful, if this site dont convince them, then nothing will

yeah your specialist doesn't know what she's talking about, it's a myth you have to cut them, We've had dozens of members who had old mature locks that went back to normal hair, hell If i ever remove mine I'm sure as hell not going back to a shaved head, lol.tell them it's your hair/decision (just be prepared parents will always expect the worse from any situation, mountain out of molehill kinda deal.)locks are safe tho. 
I think I figured out why she thinks it ruins your hair. She probably learned that a dread perm is the only way to get dreads, and that if you don't want that then lots of wax would do it. I just talked to her on the phone (thank god she's miles and miles away) and she said that I am about the most stupid person she's ever talked to, that I'm really gullible for believing what people on the internet say, and that of course you have to use wax, how else would it stay in your hair?. wow. ricky williams said:

LMAO! "*slap,slap*" She clearly has no idea what she is talking about, people have been getting dreads for longer than there has been wax or dread perms! Well maybe she will do some research if she really cares to know? Some people would just rather be ignorant and upset I guess. yeah, she says that she has never done dreads, never will but she knows a lot more about them than me just because she watched one person get a dread perm. And that person came back whining that their hair was ruined. Wonderful how some people are so ignorant, huh?
