Sleeping on them probably. As they mature they will round out.

Palm rolling will only do 1 of 2 things. Either it will do nothing. If you don't do it often, it won't create lasting knots. Or... If you do it a lot, you will destroy your locks. The damage done by palm rolling is mostly centered around your roots. So you don'tnecessarilynotice it for a long time, until your hair grows out. At this point, it can be too late. It's better not to start. I have a video on my page showing what only 2 weeks of palm rolling did to my locks.

As for your locks being flatter, don't worry about that. They get squished and mashed in every direction when you sleep. Most will round themselves out, some wont. You'll learn to love those funny shaped ones so much more because they are unique

if your worried about flatness get a tam to sleep in and wear around; having your locks up in a tam allows them the freedom to move around and create knots, and lets for them to be in ways that they normally would not and helps get loose hair and stuff like on the top of your head to knot up. i have a basket hat from knotty boy from a couple years back and i've lived in that thing for days at a times
