I don't fully disagree. In my opinion hair should free to move, catch a breeze, bounce as you walk, etc. It seems to me the most logical way to make dreads. They have to live and grow with you. They can't do that all locked up in a tam!
Tams seems to be more likely to create a big congo if worn religiously. Sometimes too much of a good thing can be bad. And tams are good, don't get me wrong. They serve an important role in protecting dreads. I just don't think that they play a very major role in actually forming dreads.
And really, you're going natural right?. Why use a tam to intervene in the process more than you have to? Sorry if I'm projecting more meaning onto your journey than is actually there but it just seems counter-intuitive to the general idea of natural dreadlocks
For myself my hair and the process it is going through is a bit of a statement. What good is a statement if no one can see it? My dreads are about me finding my self esteem, my courage to really be me. I'm not going to turn around and hide that underneath a tam. I don't even like tying up my hair for work. I never tie it up when I'm on my own time.
Ultimately, I think you should wear a tam whenever you feel the need to but you should be letting your hair free as much as possible. I'm sure you know how good a nice breeze feels when it blows through your hair. Why deny yourself that pleasure if you don't have to? :D

I did not mean to write an essay. I have a problem.
