Dread dead hair or what?

When your hair is knotting up, does this cause your hair to become damaged? Basically does having dreads damage hair?

causing split ends, breakage etc.

just letting it dread doesnt

Unfortunately, anything you do to your hair will cause damage. The wind, air pollution, brushing, combing really anything will cause some form of damage. Just letting it dread naturally will cause the least amount of damage to it though.
