I just got back from visiting my family. Ughhhhhhhhhhhh!Guess what I heard constantly?Yup hair comments.By day two I was ready to shave my head and scream "ARE YOU HAPPY NOW?"The funny thing is my dad did not notice, he just asked what color my hair was this time. My best back home friend did not notice either until I pointed it out.My mother would not shut up about my dready hair. One day I aloed it down because I was having a wild fuzz day and she was commenting and looking and I just did not want to hear it anymore. She said it was all in fun but it was not fun for me. I even explained that my hair was very clean and healthy and that before I had been going bald but now I was losing much less hair. No one cared, I just looked like a freak to them.On a nice note I enjoyed going to the co-op store a couple times. Lots of natural types there and no one looked at my hair twice because I was one of several dready shoppers. That was nice.

yeah, my mom just came to visit me and she hates 'em. fortunatly, she didn't tell me that. she tries not to be outwardly judgmental. she did, however, upon seeing lots of older dreads, ask when mine would look like that. "that's not so bad," she'd say. years, i told her, years. plus she just found out her best friends daughter grew up to be an internet porn star, so i can do no wrong in her eyes, lol. i do have a lot of people in my life that really, really loved my hair before. it was quite beautiful, long with lots of ringlette curls. my reasons for dreads are deeply personal and reflect my philosophy and personality, so mostly everyone has pretty much gotten over it, or will ,or won't...that's ok too. as long as i like em, right?

its ok we adopted you you got a new family now dreadilocks said:
I know this is an old post and since I'm new I don't know what the take is on dredging up old posts but this one caught my eye.

My mother stopped talking to me because of my dreads. Actually I stopped calling her and since I was the only one making the effort we ended our communication. We had serious issues before all the dread issues though (obviously) so this was not life effecting, sadly.

She had no problem with all of my tattoos, my piercings, my clothes ... it was only the dreads. The one thing that was non scarring or permanent! She was nasty about it too. The verbal abuse and dreads lies she slung is what made me break it off. She didn't care to know how her grand-babies were growing and doing she just wanted to convince me that I should cut my hair. 7 years later I'm a lot happier in life. It's rough when the only living parent is too ignorant to give you acceptance. I have a higher tolerance of accepting ignorance from strangers now though. When I get a sour look or snicker I have the greatest come-back .... yeah ...I know! My mom disowned cause I look like this and give them a big :) Makes them mind their business every time!!

Just wanted to add my story of discrimination so that when some of you are getting your balls busted by family members (it happens) ...know it is in good fun. If they did have big issues with your hair choices they wouldn't want you around :)

I used to get alot of crap from my dad and my grandparents, my mom was ok with them. Like you said I have a higher tolerance accepting ignorance from people now. You can pick your friends but you cant pick your blood related family.

When my step-dad's mom died my family picked me up on the way down to california for her funeral. That part of the family are hard core evangelist xians. By our last night there I thought all religious confrontations had been avoided...but then all of a sudden I knew I was wrong as I watched them all gathering around my younger brother to pray and help him accept jesus in his heart...

They went after me next...said I needed to cut my hair to remove the demons I was carrying around...

never felt so trapped before...
