Old dog, new tricks

For the first 55 years of my life I have had short hair. About 18 months ago I decided to grow it long.
My wife and I will be moving to a small fishing town on the northern NSW coast sometime next year to live a quieter and more natural lifestyle. She suggested ( jokingly ) that I grow dreads to fit our new life. She should know by now that I am always up for a challenge. I did my research and came upon this forum and decided that freeform dregs are the way to go for me.
This morning I went for a swim in the ocean and washed my hair with bi carb and cider vinegar, air dried and this is the result. Day 1

Before anyone says anything that should read "dreads" not "dregs". Haha, the problem with posting from a phone

just fwi we no longer recommend the bicarb/acv it weakens the hair

Oh is it still OK as a monthly deep cleanse soak? Or would dish soap be more gentle?  

its really harsh it exfoliates by actually burning off the top layer of skin making a dead skin paste

dreadlockshampoo has a awesome charcoal based deep cleanse called detox (u have to request  it its not on the site yet)

after using it you can suck the water out of your dreads and it tastes filtered and clean (i don't usually drink the water here)

dish soaps..ok if theres no other option but you shouldn't need a deep cleanse unles you get real dirty

We are living near Brisbane at the moment. Cant wait to get out of here and move to Iluka next year. Hopefully i will have some dreads by then

Its been 2 weeks since I stopped brushing my hair and there has been a noticeable change. I used to brush my hair straight back, but it has now naturally parted down the middle. I can also see where it is starting to section and the hair is grouping together. I am not real impressed with the part or the big fuzzy bush growing out the back of my head but at least it will give the guys at work something to talk about. I bought a couple of wide headbands from Etsy to keep out of my eyes when I am working. Will update in a couple of weeks. Cheers

It has been 4 weeks since I started letting my hair do its own thing. It has started to develop baby dreads and I have about 30 so far. My hair is so thick and curly it takes some time each day to find and separate the sections. If I didn't do, this it would be just a massive clump. My routine is to wash every 2 - 3 days, and every day it gets wet and drip dried when I shower. Since I started growing my hair my scalp has been healthier than when I had a buzz cut - very little flaking or itchiness. Occasionally I have to put it in a ponytail or wear a band when I go out just to keep the stiffs happy and keep it out of my eyes. 

A few weeks ago I started to question my motives and dedication to growing locks after reading the history and current politics, but then figured that if they grow naturally then the only people that could be affronted must be very narrow minded. This has now made me more determined to complete this journey and to experience all that it has to offer
