I'm still a diehard punk rocker, but this was back when I wore mohawks and fins in the 80's and early 90's. My secret recipe for spiked hair that would hold fast through a rowdy night of slam dancing and into the wee hours? Knox unflavored gelatin and egg whites. Aqua-net was ONLY for emergencies (beware of fire, kiddies!)
Thanks a lot, guys! I wouldn't give my dreads up for all the thin crust pizza in NYC, but I had a lot of fun with them way back when. After all these decades, I'm still amazed at how accepting people have become to mohawks and radical hair styles in the mainstream -- especially on women. It's about friggin' time. Back in the 80's, my friends and I -- both female and male -- had to trudge through some really abusive territory. Even just walking down the street or riding the subway was cause for people to try and fuck with us (or try to beat us up). But, through it all, we stood strong and proud as punks. I think this is definitely what helped me step on to the dreadlock path. Back when I started mine in 95, there weren't a lot of people I knew wearing them and there definitely weren't any supportive internet communities yet. I knew what I wanted to do and set my mind to it. And ohhhh, the abuse and intolerance was thick -- from family as well as strangers on the streets and subways -- but I stood strong and let my dreads thrive.
It's really cool to see you guys here and I know you have your own great stories, too, about starting your dreads and what your journey has been like for you. It's great to have this kind of community online. I hope the young kids starting theirs realize what a blessing this is. Take care and have a great weekend x0x
Totally Awesome!!!! Lovin it!
