Challeneges with maintaining short dreads

Who has overcome any obstacles with short dreads? I know starting dreads with 3 in of hair can be tough and require more upkeep, however i plan to just go the natural route since i have started with the TNR method. Doesnt seem like too much work to me.

rubber bands, palm rolling, washing, sleeping, showering, etc...
