UPDATE: In May of 2013 I decided to brush out my fatty dreadlocks. It was a two week process, but only because I only brushed out one a day. I was unhappy with them, but as soon as they were gone I missed my locks. So on February 7th of this year I had the same woman who crocheted my fatties do the twist and rip method on my hair. I now have 33 dreadies that I am happy with.
Thanks for the support everyone.
Taye: I was trying to conform to the more popular dread style so that I would get less pressure to take them out entirely. They are much more stiff and they were quite painful for the first few days. In fact, i think I've just become numb to the pain. My boyfriend is supportive, but the rest of my family isn't. My mom is the main critic..:(
TBL: It definitely takes them awhile to dry. I already see a difference in the length of drying time from when they were natural and had regular tips compared to the blunted tips I have now. I'll take the microtowel into consideration.
Tim: Thank you. Sadly, I agree, I liked them better before. I thought I didn't like the poofiness of them before, but now I feel like I have bastardized cornrows. They look like manufactured dreads now, and it took getting them crocheted to realize I DID'NT want that.
So now I face the question: How do I get them back to what I want? I don't want to offend the girl who did the work, she did exactly what I asked and she is good at what she does. I'm not sure I like the thickness, but I don't want them to look like the mini-braids some people have either. I really should have logged on here religiously for support instead of coming back in crisis.
Again, thanks for letting me rant. And thank you all for the feedback!
I love fat dreads, and I love your before photo. Nice and full and natural, they look beautiful. Your after photo, to me, looks like manipulated dreads that got forced to do something they would not do on their own. They still look good, don't get me wrong, but I would let them get back to where they look natural again. That is only my opinion. You are beautiful and so are your dreads, let Mother Nature take control again, She never gets it wrong.
be peaceful and blessed.
Wow, those are some fat dreads you have. How long does it take for them to dry? I am not sure if you Know Athena, but blunted tips lengthen the drying process. Dreads that have a natural drip line at the ends will dry quicker. Also, fat dreads can take over 24 hours to dry. May I recommend using a micro towel/ Shamwow type to absorb water from your dreads, this will help you out some with the drying time.
I like your before picture better. It looks so much softer and thicker. The second picture looks hard and stiff and scalpy ( and a little painful). Why did you feelpressuredto do this? You can leave them alone and never go back to a "professional" It will take a while for them to naturalize, fatten up and become softer again. Please don't let anyone crochet them again. Instead of crocheting and forcing the loose hair into a dread... Loose hair will either join into existing dreads...or form new baby dreads all by itself. Then you will have more dreads. You can always TnR your front or you could let them lock up naturally if you want to. It is a personal choice to have fringe/bangs. So what ever you decide...just love them, keep them clean and separated. That is all you really need to do to have beautiful healthy dreads.
professional, I suppose. But I feel like I was pressured into it for sure. The girl did a great job, but I feel like it took getting them "tightened up" for me to realize that I'm unhappy with the quantity, not "quality" of my dreads. I have 13, but about half my hair is left out in front for bangs. I don't really like that either. I didn't want SO much hair left out, but I did that in the beginning so that's on me.
Didn't think I'd need to vent so much, thank you for helping me to ask myself that question.
What doYOU think about it?
peace
I recently had maintenance done on my 1 1/2 yr old dreads. Loose hair was crocheted into existing dreads and the tips were blunted a bit.
