So I just put dreads in my hair 33 days ago now. Did them mostly myself other than the hard to reach places on the back of my head. It took me a long time to fully commit because everyone around me was always saying 'are u sure ur ready to cut ur hair off when it's all over?' And 'ur hair is really gonna start to smell' and ' once u do it there's no going back'. I had all these fear inducing comments flying around my brain for almost a year. I wanted dreads but was scared. I was scared because I didn't know enough (anything) :p about dreads. Only what rumors fly around about them. I decided to do an online hunt myself for the truth about dreads. That's when I found out that dreads can be a lifestyle. A hobby. A big change. A project to love and care about and watch it grown and change. And that dreads are NOT at all what people generally think and say about them. After I felt that I understood the more realistic world of dreading and not the rumors and stereotypes. I just woke up one morning and sat on my couch and started twistig'n'ripping my hair into my new dreads. Never made an announcement to friends and family befor I started so they were all quite startled. In fact strangely enough I'd have to say that many people in my life after seeing my dreads for the first time had a look of deep concern as if I'd just made some terrible rash decision that I could never turn back from. As ecstatic as I am and have been since day one of my dreads, there are still people that are clearly convinced that I just haven't woken up to the harsh reality of my dreads. Must point out now that my mother is crazy in love with them as is my wonderful dad, sister, brother, and a few other close family members and co-workers :)

Ya, it'll pass. The sooner you can not wash it as much the better, your scalp will adjust. I get dandruff here and there still, but not as often. Ive used pure, gentle, essential oil on my scalp/roots too, but very sparingly. Jojoba oil or almond oil.. In time I've stopped keeping track of when I wash my hair. I think I've gone as long as two months. Usually when it starts to get itchy I know it's time to wash :)

Thanks :) Ya right now I'm washing my hair once a week. Dealing with some shitty dandruff too. Don't know what to do about it

I admire your decision and dedication. I did the same rambling in my brain and knew I needed to be ready for the journey. I love my locks, it's been 2.5 years and they do not smell. Actually when I do wash my hair (about once/month) my dreads even feel soft right after :)I love how tightly they've locked now. I as well am mostly facing acceptance with my hair-lifestyle and I work as a behavioral health technician in the mental health field. I am also in graduate school for my Masters. I love that I can stand out as different from the rest with wonderful locks. Most people ask me about them and enjoy learning. I rarely get negative comments. Maybe just some strangle looks here and there. But I greet everyone with a smile :)Enjoy your journey!!

Ya I'm really stoked on meeting so many ppl on the Internet who also have dreads. I find all I ever want to talk about is dreads and it's great to have ppl to share them with that care as well. Me getting dreads strangely enough has absolutely made other ppls colors shine. Such a minor change I make to my appearance and all of a sudden I'm under some umbrella of dirty, unhygienic, jobless persons. Ppl just quickly when u have dreads and facial piercings. I AM clean, I DO shower, and I'm an employed nurse working in an acute/long term care facility. My dreads do not get in the way of job performance any more than than a bun or a braid gets in the way of other ppls job preformances

dreads are polarizing by that i mean they show you who the people in your life are

they fall into the 2 groups the close minded haters who refuse to accept you if yor slightly different in any way at all

and those who accept and just love you for your uniqueness

you could be married for 20 years then u dread and your spouse will not accept them and will turn mean and hgatefull (but yu will realize they always were and you just let them get away with it)

on the other side more worthwhile ppl wil gravitate towards you respect the hell out of you and really enrich yoir life in many ways

i guess what im saying is .. the ppl who look down on yiu now arent worth yor time anyways..

rock those locks and just see who may come runnin yoir way

Thankyou so much for commenting :) I'm so excited to be a part of this site. It's fun to have other ppl who r just as interested in talking about their dreads as I am. They're my new obsession and I'm so glad I did them. And I'm glad I didn't pay $500 and have someone talk me into wax and other icky products also

All that really matters is that you love them. Your mom liking them is a perk.

I, like most of the people here, know quite a few people in our lives who are ignorant about locks. My mom thinks they are ugly and need to be cut off. My aunt thinks that they are making me go bald (My genes are doing that).

As long as you feel like yourself with them, that's all that matters. Locks do not need to be cut to get rid of them. Even the most mature ones can be soaked in conditioner and gently brushed out. If you don't us wax, they won't smell. Dreadlocks need to be clean to form. So, it's pretty much impossible to have smelly healthy locks. There is a powerpoint show that a member created a while back and posted on here. You can probably still find it
